Of course this is a bit late (we're near half-way through 2007), but this is a nice analysis of what and why some terms are popular.
I'm still missing a tool which allows me to filter out proper names to get generic nouns which rank high all the time.
This would give us writers a vocabulary to use in our titles and text which would keep them ranked more highly in search engines.
