Clinton:
"'We have never done this before. Never in the history of our republic have we ever financed a conflict, military conflict, by borrowing money from somewhere else.'"
Loves high taxes, that guy. We've always financed wars by setting in taxes which then are kept on the books for generations afterwards. Income Tax was originally to pay for the Civil War. Monthly telephone excise tax was to pay for the Spanish-American War. Estates (Death) tax was to pay for yet another war.
The deficit, with the Iraq war added into the mix, was well on its way to being halved through tax cuts, before Katrina made her mark. Bush pointed out that budget (pork) contractions would be the other way to do it.
Stuck on stupid is the democratic point of how if you can't make your budget, you just ask for a bigger allowance. Anyone else has to tighten their belts and figure out how to be more productive and efficient.
Stuck on stupid is the democratic point of ignoring facts of private industry and donations being more effective and faster response than any government. Private industry picks leaders on their ability to get the job done, not fool around with interns and lie to Congress and the press.
